Houston Roofing Texas installs and repairs TPO and flat roofs in Houston, TX. Low-slope roofs are everywhere here: rooftop decks and flat sections on three-story townhomes, porches and additions, and nearly every commercial building. TPO is a white, heat-welded membrane that reflects summer heat and has strong welded seams, which is why it has become the go-to flat roof in the city.

Where you find flat roofs in Houston

  • Three-story townhomes in the Heights, Montrose, Spring Branch and Garden Oaks, often with a low-slope section or roof deck
  • Porch roofs, carports and rear additions on older homes
  • Garage apartments with low-slope roofs
  • Offices, retail centers and warehouses. See commercial roofing.

Common flat roof problems

  • Ponding water that sits more than 48 hours after rain
  • Seam failures on older membranes or poorly welded TPO
  • Parapet and wall flashing leaks, the top source of townhome leaks
  • Clogged scuppers and drains during heavy rain
  • Punctures from foot traffic, AC service and roof decks
  • Blisters and shrinkage on aging modified bitumen and older single-ply roofs

Why townhome flat roofs leak

Many new townhomes pair steep shingle roofs with small low-slope sections where water collects. When those sections are nearly flat, a few inches of standing water after a Houston downpour find any weak seam or flashing detail. The fix is usually better drainage with tapered insulation or crickets, plus properly welded seams and flashing, not just more sealant.

TPO repair

For roofs with life left, we clean and hot-air weld seams, patch punctures with matching membrane, rebuild flashing at walls and parapets and clear drains and scuppers. Small repairs are often a few hundred dollars. See roof leak repair for how we trace hard-to-find leaks.

TPO replacement

  1. Remove the old roof or prepare it for a recover where allowed.
  2. Replace wet insulation and damaged decking.
  3. Add tapered insulation or crickets so water flows to drains and scuppers.
  4. Install TPO with hot-air welded seams.
  5. Flash walls, parapets, curbs and penetrations with TPO details.
  6. Probe-test seams and photograph the finished roof.

Other flat roof systems

We also repair modified bitumen and EPDM roofs, and apply silicone or acrylic coatings to extend the life of sound flat roofs.

TPO roofing questions

How long does a TPO roof last in Houston?

A well-installed TPO roof typically lasts about 15 to 25 years, depending on membrane thickness, drainage and foot traffic.

Is standing water on my flat roof a problem?

Small puddles that dry within a day or two are common. Water that stays longer shortens roof life and should be corrected with drainage work.

Can you work around my roof deck?

For repairs, often yes. For replacement, deck sections usually need to be lifted and reset with proper protection pads.
